Each of the final three years of our strategic framework focuses on one of our cross-cutting themes: democracy, climate & environment, and equality. While 2025 focused on equality, 2026 will put the spotlight on climate and environment.
Philea recognises environmental and climate issues as critically important across Europe and globally – especially as these topics face declining prioritisation by public institutions, private actors, and even philanthropic organisations. This neglect poses an escalating threat to both people and the planet.
Through the spotlight on climate and environment in 2026, we aim to:
- Expand the conversation on climate and environment as cross-cutting issues linked to social justice, democracy and adaptation, and including the voices of those in crisis-affected contexts.
- Facilitate bold, cross-sectoral dialogue and showcase best practices to inspire action.
- Support members to deepen their commitment to integrating climate and environment – whether they are just getting started or are ready to show leadership – and spotlighting the leadership of sectoral climate champions.
- Underline that, for philanthropy to invest in climate and environment, it needs to operate in an enabling environment.
- Internally as Philea, lead by example – greening our operations, improving climate literacy, and aligning theory with practice.
Our hope is that this will create internal “synapses” that will last beyond the focus year, strengthening our knowledge, understanding and collective thought leadership in this field.
How we will spotlight climate and environment in 2026:
- Look for opportunities to integrate climate and environment, and the knowledge already gathered, into the various clusters and events.
- Strengthen the climate collaboration circle within the Philea team to build a clear, actionable narrative around climate and environment as cross-cutting challenges.
- Focus the annual Philea Forum and EuroPhilantopics events on the topics of climate and environment.
- Apply a hope-based narrative and approach through all our conversations around environment and climate.
